where are the non-htaccess rewrites?

Under the permalinks tab, you have option to set the tags base, for example. I have it set to /tag, so that https://domain.com/tag/some_tag
is a valid url. This is not stored in any .htaccess file. My question is: Where is this information, and the rest of the rewrites mentioned on that admin page, stored?
