I used to be able to see the text and visual editor tabs when I’m working on a post or a page in the dashboard. But instead all I see on the far left of the box where I type is a toggle for full screen.

About two weeks ago someone wrote a tutorial for something and referenced adding short code to the text tab and then clicking back to the visual editor tab to do some writing for a post.

But those options are gone for me. Was this a recent change in a WordPress update? I do see the code button, but I don’t understand where those other options went.

    Thank you.

  • Hi,

You should see text/visual on the right hand side of the post editor screen. see https://vaughanmontgomery.co.uk/screens/editor.png

If you don’t see this, it could be that your theme or a plugin you have installed may be conflicting or not working properly with the latest WP.

Shortcode should be able to be entered on either the text or visual tab though, it shouldn’t matter.

Can you try temporarily switching to the default twentyfourteen theme and see if you see the visual/text tabs then?

Then try disabling all plugins and then check again, if the tabs appear, then activate each plugin one at a time, checking after each, until the issue returns, then you will know which plugin (if any) might be causing it.

    Hope this helps

Thanks so much for helping me.

I followed your suggestions, refreshed my browser and Site Ground cache, and I’m still not seeing the tabs.

I thought for sure this would work. Do you have any other suggestions? I’ve just created a subdomain of the live website, so I can do some testing without affecting the actual site.

If it’s not the plugins, I can’t imagine what would be causing this.

I should add that I’m using the Genesis framework and the eleven40 Pro theme.

Everything is up to date, including WordPress and all plugins.

This happened in the last few weeks. I don’t remember when I last saw the visual editor and text tabs, but when I finally needed to use the text tab, suddenly it wasn’t there.

I’m not sure how to proceed with a project I’m working on without those tabs. My site is hosted by Site Ground.

I can’t imagine where the conflict may be that removed them..

I’m experiencing the same problem in Firefox and Safari.

I would really welcome some help with this. This is such an unexpected issue.

    Thank you.

Vaughn was a big help in suggesting I deactivate plugins and try a different theme. I should have known to do that, but forgot.

In this case it turned out to be something else. The kind folks at my hosting company followed the steps in this WordPress forum post from two years ago, and it worked.

    https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/visual-editor-tab-not-showing-how-i-fixed-it

In the user profile, there’s a box you can check to turn off the visual editor. They also had to go into the files and reset the rich text editing feature to true.

I hope that helps if anyone else encounters the same problem!
