where are the "translation ready" files?

Translation-ready means the text on the theme is capable of being translated. Whether actual language files are packaged with the theme is another thing. Some themes include them while some don’t.

If language files aren’t present but the theme is translation-ready, you can use this plugin to translate the theme and create the files you need https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/codestyling-localization/

What about the theme itself, is there a version where it looks more like the thumbnail presentation, with the tree and all?

Default theme language is English. Translated files ru_RU.mo and ru_RU.po included in latest theme versions.

I could try to translate it to my language with Poedit, if I could get the original pot file. I would unfortunately be quite unable to translate from Russian to French. :]
