Where can I safely download WAMP?

I recommend using “Local”. It’s one download and lets you create multiple WP sites with just a couple of clicks. https://wpengine.com/local/ and its free.

Well, I only need one! lol But this looks good. I did a quick search on wpengine, and they rated well with PC Mag (paid services, anyway), so it seems to be a safe site.

As un-technical as I am, I tend to be quite leery of most sites offering free downloads, and try to check everything out first.

I use it on my Mac to quickly create demo sites. It works well on both Windows and Mac and does not require any use of WP Engine.

Thanks for your quick reply! I’ll try MAMP, then, because it didn’t work with the wpengine “local” download. I downloaded it, went through the setup, named my “site” etc., but then couldn’t access it.

A message was on the top that said, “Missing hosts entry,” along with a handy button that said, “Fix it.”

When I clicked the “Fix it” button, an error message window popped up that said, “Couldn’t update hosts file. Local ran into a problem while trying to update hosts file. Please ensure hosts file is not locked by anti-virus.”

I have Webroot, so I went there and sure enough, in the advanced settings I found a box with a check mark next to, “Prevent any program from modifying hosts file.” I un-checked it, saved my change, and thought all would be well.

But it wasn’t — I kept getting the same error messages. So frustrating, because I’ve been trying for days now, which is crazy, since I just nee to set up a local WP site to practice on.

I’ll try the MAMP and see if that works.

@mmediagroup Yes, I downloaded it, and then was totally confused (hence my name…gaah! I DO NOT understand computers!). At least with the wpengine local, once it was downloaded a WP site popped up, that I could name and set up. Although unfortunately, all the crap with the host file put the kibosh on that, even after telling my anti-virus to let the program change it.

But once I downloaded MAMP, it was all Greek to me. It just looked like a bunch of confusing developer gibberish, I didn’t see how I could end up with a local WP site.

I have totally wasted my Saturday.

But I appreciate both of you guys trying to help the most technology-challenged person in the world. :/

No worries, I know technology can be frustrating. Please rest assured you haven’t wasted any time as I’m sure you learned a few new things along the way – and that is time well spent in my book :)!

You are right, MAMP is more for the tech oriented and I misunderstood your level of computer understanding :P.

As a side note, why are you trying to install WordPress offline? It might be easier to work on your site directly online and limit its visibility to admins only (while it’s in development) with a plugin that shows a coming-soon page.

The only reason I want an offline WP site is for a WP class I’m attempting to take on LinkedIn.

I used to have a WP blog (which gave me fits for the 1 1/2 years I had it!), but it’s been a while, and I need to brush up. Besides, I’d only used Gute for about a month before I shut the blog down.

But I want to add blogging to freelance writing offerings, so I thought I’d better re-familiarize myself with WP.
