• I’ve updated the plugin but it seems that the option to set “Overlaid Gallery Panel number of items” has been removed?
I am using Picasa galleries with some galleries over 100 photos and since this option isn’t available anymore, it shows all photos in the overlay/popup which is not user-friendly. That used to be limited with prev/next arrows due to that setting.

Can I set the number of items in the Picasa gallery shortcode? Or is there any other way to achieve this?

That went away in version 1.55 – it is documented in the Changelog. The previous method of display was buggy (images would get cut off etc.), and had crippling limitations on mobile devices.

So if I understand correctly, there is no way of achieving any limitation/pagination anymore (at Picasa/Google albums) since version 1.55?

Correct – there is no pagination possible on the overlaid popup (for any provider, not just Picasa).

I am in the process of making some changes for Picasa to support the changes to the API as announced by Google. As a part of the changes, you will be able to do pagination for the “in page” display the way it is described here: https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/flickr-collection-and-pagination?replies=6#post-7970864. This will still not enable pagination in the overlay, though.
