• I’ve configured wp-comments-post.php so that it won’t let through comments that use “<strong”, yet I get such comments from bots. I have been suggested that wordpress might be converting some other tags to but I’ve been unable to find out which ones.
    Any suggestions?

Most bots don’t use “comments”. They use “trackbacks”, which WordPress treats much the same as comments.

If you want to block spam, use spam blocking plugins instead of trying to roll your own solution. Bad Behavior. Akismet. Spam Karma 2. These are your friends. Use them wisely.

Actually I’m trying to learn php at the moment aswell so I thought I won’t go the easy way with Akismet or the others.
    All suggestions still welcome.
