Where is html located?

  • Okay, total newbie question here. I’m trying to correct some errors that I received while checking my site on validator.w3.org. It reported a bunch of errors back with suggestions on how to fix them. They even offer cleaned up versions of the code (using HTML-Tidy).

    What I can not find, however, is which files contain the errors. What are their names? I basically entered my site url and am now trying to correct the issues, but don’t know which files contain these errors! It lists the line number of the code, just not the file name.

    Sorry for asking such a basic question, but I just can’t seem to figure out where to locate the errors that have been pointed out. I’m using the pinboard theme, and this is my site:

  • Dynamic websites (like WordPress) don’t have static HTML pages – the pages are generated when loaded in the browser. So you can’t use something like HTML-Tidy on php based sites.

    You’d have to figure out where the code with the errors is coming from – it can be theme templates, plugins, content, etc. Not all that simple actually. Also, not all “errors” are problematic or even true errors – some result from browser differences or changing code standards.

    Thanks WPyogi, that explains a lot! Out of curiosity, is there a markup validator that specializes in WP sites?

    Not that I know of — WP sites use the same HTML – it’s just the way the HTML is generated that’s different. And a validator only looks at the end product (i.e. the HTML that you see if you use View Source in a browser) – so there’d really be no way for a validator to know where that code came from.
