• I want to add a splash new template page announcing that my site is currently undergoing maintenance, but where precisely do I create that page? Nothing I’ve read so far tells me.

I don’t want to add a page in the administration panel because that would contain my sidebar. And I want just text and maybe a photo in it. (Don’t want to use a plugin).

And there’s no place in the theme editor to add a new template page, so is it created in a text editor or exactly where?

Thanks very much for some guidance here.

Thanks, but this plugin doesn’t work for me. Neither does another one I tried. Don’t know why but suddenly couldn’t get into admin plugin page to either activate or deactivate plugins, so had to delete them from folder.

At this point, don’t want to mess with anymore plugins. I know what to do with the splash page once it’s created, in settings, etc. but all I need to know now is precisely where do I go to create this splash maintenance page.

In your main WordPress directory,You should have an index.php file but not an index.html file. Put your maintenance page there. The server should display the index.html file and not the index.php file. When you are done, rename the index.html to something like index.maintenance to save it for a future use.

Thanks Michael and lokrin, but I received your info after I had attempted to upgrade. I tried the manual extended upgrade and it failed. Having lost so much time down the tubes and not wanting to waste anymore, I asked my always helpful host, Arvixe, if they could upgrade for me. They said yes and did it in no time – including updating and reactivating all my plugins – for a very reasonable charge. Am mucho delighted.
