where to add onclick to the submit?

Actually, I have added a function in function.php to generated a sequential ticket number so when people submit the contact a number is generated. Somehow I couldn’t find a way to generate the function on submit and instead the function generates each time the page loads. Not sure if it’s possible to give me a hand where I should find the submit function and what to do so on submit my function will run.
(Is the original submission using ajax?)
