I was provided with all the files for a wordpress site (in a tar.gz format) to transfer to a new host. I installed WordPress on the new host and it is now active, but can’t use the WP Import feature because it requires files to be in xml format. I need to know which folders/files to upload to the new host manually. The first time I tried uploading everything and was not able to access the database at all. Besides the content folder, what should I upload to bring the site back please?

    Thank you!!

  • First do what you’ve done already by setting up the new WordPress site and then upload the wp-content folder to the new site. When that’s raedy, you’ll need to import the database dump SQL into your new database. You should DROP all of the existing database tables (no need to back them up as you’ve only just installed), and then perform the import thrugh whatever SQL tool you have (most hosts offer phpMyAdmin).

    Hello ericaski,

After installing WordPress on the new host, you do not need to upload any other folders/files from previous host as everything is already present in the WordPress folder like themes and plugins. You just need to take database backup of WordPress from the old host and import the backup to this new host. And please do check your wp-config.php file for the database entries.

    Thank you Catacaustic. Two questions:

1 )The previous host provided me with files via dropbox. In reference to a ‘database dump’, in the mysql folder, there are only 3 files:

    collocam_colloca.create (2 kb)
    collocam_colloca.sql (2200 kb)
    roundcube.sql (1 kb)

Should I just import the .sql through MyPHPadmin?

    2) When you say ‘drop’ the old table, does that mean I should delete the database tht was created with the new install in MysqlDatabases?

Thanks for your patience. Never done this before.

With the help of catacaustic’s tips, I was able to move the site successfully.

    Thank you.
