• Hello,

    I have two security-related questions.

    1. I’m wondering which role I should assign to a freelance developer for my WP site. Before giving me a quote, he would like to gain access to my wp-admin to determine if what I am asking for is possible. He wants to have a look at the functionality and see how my ads plugin works. I want to give him access but I am conscious about security.

    2. If I award him the job, which role should I then assign to him? I’m assuming I should only be the only one with an admin role for security reasons, but with any other role, will he be able to change settings and make the adjustments I have requested? Or will I need to give him admin access?

    Thanks very much.

  • What role is needed depends on the extent of the work that needs to be done. As a pretty general rule, most things that require developers will need at least an admin account, and msot likely access to your websites files and database as well.

The first thing to do before anything else is get a backup of your site before anything is done to it or anyone else has any access. If you have that, you’ve got a fall-back just in case something bad does happen so you can restore that backup and change all of the passwords.

If you’re concerned about security, you shouldn’t hire anyone that you don’t trust. I know that there’s some shady people out there, but there’s a vast amjority of trustworthy developers out there that could do the same job and leave you assured that there’s nothing untowards going on.

Thank you, I will create a back up.

How can you know who is trustworthy when you have to hire a stranger from a freelancing platform? I’m not assuming this person isn’t trustworthy but I also don’t want to assume that they are. Your suggestion to create a backup sounds like a good solution.
