  • I think I know what the original poster is asking and I had the same question. Which URLs do we submit to Google? I just submitted the main index URL and the number of “URLs Submitted” is only the number in my first “file”. It doesn’t seem to be crawling the rest from that index file to add all of the other URLs.

Wait. Nevermind. I just refreshed the page again and the count is increasing. It seems to work.

?? index files work slightly differently, instead of one huge sitemap file you now have a couple.

I had 16K posts, I submitted the Index file, It showing lower numbers of counts in Google WEBMASTER tool.
One more question is that, I submitted compressed simemap.xml (sitemap.xml.gz) before it, It is better or not better because I 10 days ago by mistaken I remove the sitemap from my server, I faced the lost of traffic Many plugins do not created 15K links sitemap so I created a compressed sitemap but still do not get the high traffic
note: I am regular user of Yoast but last version don’t created 14K links sitemap.
I submitted either compressed or simple
New Yoast version give me my lost traffic

The new version of the sitemap works entirely differently. It creates an XML Sitemap Index file, which contains several sitemaps, all added up it should be the same 16k, but you’ll have to look at the sitemaps for each post type and each taxonomy.
