I upgraded following the instructions provided. I was finally able to get to the new Dashboard on which I can bring up the only post and the only page on the site, but all pictures show a broken link. I checked and rechecked and checked again that the entries in wp-config for Database Name, Host Name, User Name, and Password are correct.

If I disable the 2.8.6 installation and revert to 2.7.1 everything works fine, suggesting to me that MySQL is not corrupted. The 2.7.1 version is at https://www.bergiesplace.com/Newsite.

Any suggestions as to where to look?

P.S. I negelected to mention that if I click on Visit Site on the Dashboard, I get a white screen.

Did you also check the database prefix in wp-config?

Also look at Settings/General for WordPress address (URL) and Blog address (URL).

In your 2.7.1 newsite I see one post in one category and two pages, is that correct?

Thanks for your time. I checked the wp-admin database prefix in both versions, 2.7.1 (which works) and 2.8.6 (which doesn’t.) They are the same in each case as are the WordPress and Blog Addresses under Settings/General. Yes, there is only one post and two pages as I haven’t yet converted from my bergiesplace.wordpress.com blog.

After upgrading my sreen has become white, I’m not sure what site I was visiting but I was looking for locksmith in London and the URL showed https://thelondonlocksmiths.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=16&Itemid=Lost-keys

@pixelcounter: did you do the automatic upgrade or did you use ftp?
When ftp, upload the wp files again (sometimes files get corrupted in an upload)

Interestingly, nothing happened for me when I clicked for Automatic Upgrade so I clicked Manual. I downloaded the .zip file and opened it into a directory on my desktop. Then I ftp’d it to bergiesplace.com/Newsite. Because of my subsequent difficulties I would up uploading it two to three times so I discount an ftp-induced problem.

    Yes, I agree.
Did you compare the picture links between 2.7.1 and 2.8.6: now it is this: https://www.bergiesplace.com/Newsite/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/image-01.jpg
What does it look like on 2.8.6, the picture link I mean?

Did you try the default theme in 2.8.6 ?

Thanks for hanging in. The picture links appear to be identical.

What was interesting is that when I converted to the default theme on 2.8.6, the post page now appears and one can also call up the pages. However, the picture links are broken. I checked wp-config for 2.8.6 (with default theme)and the database entries are all correct. I further replaced wp-config in the 2.8.6 folder with the version from the 2.7.1 folder which, as you’ll recall, did work ok. It still show broken links in 2.8.6. I’ve left the 2.8.6 version in place at https://www.bergiesplace.com/Newsite.

Another wierd thing: with 2.8.5, the default theme, and its original wp-config, if I go to its dashboard and try to edit the post, I see the post briefly and it is then replaced with about three lines of spaces and red periods. With the version of wp-config from 2.7.1, I can access the post for editing.

    Hi,
check your directories through ftp, especially uploads/2009/04 etc.

    Do they contain pictures?
    https://www.bergiesplace.com/Newsite/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/photoswitch-vtrt7-1-2-3-4-800.jpg does not load.
That normally means that this one is not there. Normally, depending on your media settings, WP creates three files, a thumbnail, a medium one and an 800 px one (if full size is bigger than your BIG setting, it also uploads the full size one.
When you open the directory uploads/2009/04 in ftp what do you see?

    hello there,

I’ve similar problem as pixelcounter. I’ve just installed WordPress 2.8.6 and after login I see dahboard for a while, and after that browser redirects me to dashboard again, but I cannot see anything… just white screen. I checked this in different browsers (Firefox, Opera, Safari, IE) but it works properly only on IE!!! strange, isn’t it?

pixelcounter, could you check is everything working properly on IE? I use IE8 right now.

    best regards,
    mrbungle

OK, henkholland, I’m back in business, and even with my preferred theme rather than the default. The upload folder under the wp-config folder in 2.6.8 had no entries. Apparently, I should have transferred that folder from the 2.7.1 folder into its right place in the 2.8.6 folder.

The need for this hadn’t occurred to me as I assumed that my uploads were all still in MySQL and would be accessed as needed by the 2.8.6 system. I obviously need to get a better reference on and understanding of the structure of wordpress.

The WordPress instructions on upgrading do, in fairness, tell one to “Delete any old WP files, saving ones you’ve modified.” and I, obviously, didn’t know the need to save the old wp-config folder.

Well, another learning experience (at age 77, do I still need these?). On a personal note, I started at RCA in 1959 and in the lab next door, they were still doing service bureau work on the RCA vacumn tube machine, BIZMAC. Since then, it’s been one damn thing after another.

I am indebted for your suggestions and guidance, and I thank you. Be Well!

mrbungle, I am using IE8. For what it’s worth I suggest you follow up on kenkholland’s suggestion. Check the content of Uploads in the wp-config folder. That solved my problem.

    Good thing (I am only 62 :))
