In trying to edit my functions.php editor I think I missed a step and now all my screens to my website are white. No links work. I tried to go into “customize themes” to recopy the coded page from the original Twenty Thirteen Child Theme, but I can’t even get into my themes. Everything has a white screen.

    Any suggestions here?!? HELP.

    Thanks.

You’ll need to access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel, and edit the file with a plain text editor to either correct or remove what you added.

Thanks James. My domain is under GoDaddy, while my host is WordPress. Can you be a little more specific here? I’ve been reading up about the links you’ve provided, but this is all new to me.
How exactly would I access SFTP or FTP? I’ve downloaded FileZilla. When filling in the top, the host would be wordpress – what would the port be?

Once I’m in, I’m assuming the generic functions.php would appear to allow me to copy it to plain text editor? I have no way of accessing the original functions.php code.

Any advice here would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

I’m trying to reset my password to do this all (as my computer “remembered” my password and I personally don’t remember it). This is the first step. Any advice here? This is obviously harder because I can’t access the website recovery at all due to the white screen.

Is there any way I can contract this work out? I’m not experienced in this area.

Ok disregard the previous message – I found my password. Now onto how to make these changes…

If you can’t clear up the issue by editing the file, you might need to replace the file with a new copy from a fresh download of the theme: https://www.ads-software.com/themes/twentythirteen/

Ok – but for FileZilla When filling in the top, the host would be wordpress – what would the port be? I think I need step-by-step advice here. This is all new to me. I’m playing around, but I want to be sure I’m doing this all right.

I’m trying to search YouTube videos for a step by step of this, but I’m not having much luck. The errors in functions.php obviously block all access to my site, which is what makes it so difficult.

Are you able to give me a step by step to resolve these errors caused by functions.php?

The host won’t be WordPress, WordPress is just the software.

Consult your hosting provider’s documentation (or their support department) for specifics on connecting to your hosting account with FTP, as the instructions vary depending on the hosting provider.

Once you have FTP access, edit the file with a plain text editor to either correct or remove what you added.

Ok. Since my domain is through GoDaddy I’m assuming this is who I contact? And would you recommend FileZilla for this?

Your domain registrar may not be the same as your hosting provider.

Your hosting provider is whomever you pay monthly or annually to host your site.

With that said, GoDaddy is both a domain registrar and hosting provider, so that’s a good place to start.

    Hi James,

So I’ve figured everything out on my end. Cyberduck has helped me access everything from my servers end (name.com). Everything connected and the files all appeared.

When editing the other day I only touched functions.php and index.php. I’ve edited these both back to the standard TwentyThirteen Child Theme, but my website still isn’t appearing. I can’t decipher what the problem may be. I may be saving it wrong, but I don’t know. Here’s a summary of what I’ve done. — When I click on the file name the editor appears, both in “editor” and the “Atom” editor. I’ve copied and pasted the generic TwentyThirteen php’s. I then also double click on the file and “transfers” appears. I click contonue and it verifies that it’s complete. I THINK this is telling me the files are overriding from the saved php’s (functions and index) on my mac desktop. Does this seem correct to you?

    Anyway…

I know you mentioned transferring everything to a fresh TwentyThirteen. Would I loose all my custom CSS this way? I’ve done alot of customization (and it’s taken me a while because I don’t have a tech background) so I don’t want to loose those edits.

I have backed up my site to dropbox about a month or so ago. Could I potentially use this to override everything that’s currently up?

    I hate this white screen ?? ?? ??

    Thanks.

That sounds like it should work. You won’t need to transfer everything though, just the file you edited before it went down, which sounds like the functions.php file.
