I am sure the problem I am having is not to do with duplicator but presumably the environment but wondering if anyone can shed any light on the whys of this scenario. Duplicating using Duplicator, to a local development stage, and cant get the home page to display. Turned on the wp-config: WP_DEBUG = true. Showing an error with a plugin, removed the plugin and a large wad of errors with other plugins detailed. Remove all the plugins and of course it works. But the question is more general than which plugins are the issue. The question is what would make the issues kill the local install but be ignored on the production hosted site.

I turned on DEBUG on the hosted site as well but wordpress displays only momentarily debug output – and then it appears to redirect displaying page with a link to the document ‘Debugging in WordPress’ on the WP Support pages.

    Any pointers appreciated!

If you want to try a different method, here is an article with the steps I use to migrate (copy) a post: https://wordpress.mcdspot.com/2012/08/22/migrating-a-wordpress-site-step-by-step/

thanks for your comment vtxyzzy will run through your points and report back at some point!

    Hey Andy,

For MU only sites you might try this plugin its free:

If you want a commercial plugin then Backup Buddy is probably going to be the best best it is suppose to support MU.

Hi Cory – actually getting there now – so will be sticking with Duplicator because other than the problem I experienced, which all along seemed unlikely to be an issue relating to your plugin, it’s a smooth tool, and really makes the process of duplication to another stage very simple.

I thank you for your efforts with this plugin and for your help on my issue.

The issue was environmental as suspected. A large number of the plugins that I have employed still use the short <? tag to start a php block – although I have not checked, I guess Hostgator must have ‘short_open_tag = On’ in the apache config. Mine was set to off! Setting it On has resolved the problem.

    Thanks mate!

No Problem… Over time the kinks will eventually get worked out, thanks for being patient…

    Cheers~
