I have one small problem. The WHOIS lookup does not work. When I look up an IP address, there are no errors and I get a message that states, “WHOIS lookup successfully completed. Please see the results below,” but no results are displayed. I use GoDaddy shared hosting.

I can use other websites to look up IP addresses, which is always a good idea before blocking any IP, but it would be easier to use the built in WHOIS Lookup. Is this a configuration issue?

Other than this one problem, the plugin appears to be working great on GoDaddy hosting.

Hi, can you checked the log files under Filesystem Security. Have you also tried to test a few different IP addresses?

    Thank you

What am I looking for in the logs in Filesystem Security? The error logs appears to be normal.

What should I be looking for?

I can do an IP search, see the message that the search completed successfully, but no results display and nothing shows up in the error log.

I’ve tested dozens of IP addresses and the WHOIS doesn’t work with any of them. I have 6 sites using this plugin and none produce any WHOIS results. They are all in a single GoDaddy account.

Are you using the latest version of AIOWPS plugin?

I will do some tests too see if I get the same issue.

Can you give me an example of an IP address you tried to do a WhoIs lookup for?
(I just tried one at random and I saw no problems at all – ie, I got a successful whois lookup result)

Yes, I am using version 4.0.6.

Here is a list of probing bots that have been hitting my sites. They all show up in the 404 Detection page. I do not show WHOIS results for any of these.

I don’t see any results in the HTML code for the page, so the results do not appear to be hidden by CSS.

    67.198.160.13
    85.128.142.71
    62.210.215.109
    108.167.189.55
    109.228.30.96
    185.93.35.163
    186.202.153.87

Let me clarify that the WHOIS Lookup feature has never worked on my sites.

I tested using both FireFox and IE with the same lack of results.

My thoughts are that it could be a configuration issue either in my sites or at GoDaddy. A plugin conflict is not likely to cause an issue like this.

Yes this must be a setting or something else related to your web server. This all works when I try it on mine.
Eg, here’s a snippet of results for one of the IP addresses you listed (108.167.189.55)

I would ask godaddy support about this.

Okay, thanks. I thought perhaps it was something I configured in the plugin that blocked this feature.

    @wpdogger is your issue resolved?

    Thread Starter WPDogger

    (@wpdogger)

    Thanks for the follow-up.

No, it has not been resolved. The tech at GoDaddy had no idea why the WHOIS lookup does not work.

I’m not seeing any error messages. When I do an IP search it returns the message, “WHOIS lookup successfully completed. Please see the results below:.” However, no results are displayed.

I’m using iplocation.net to do my IP lookups, so this is not really a problem.

Hi, that is very strange. In my local testing environment using Xampp with 109 installed plugins and 17 are active this feature works for me.

Have you tried the following, deactivate all your other plugins except this one and carry out a test?

The following is some information about my local set up.

    • Plugin Version : 4.0.8
    • WP Version : 4.5.1
    • WPMU: No
    • MySQL Version : 5.6.16
    • WP Table Prefix : wp_
    • PHP Version : 5.5.9
    • PHP Memory Limit : 256M
    • PHP Max Script Execution Time : 900 Seconds
    Thread Starter WPDogger

    (@wpdogger)

    I’ve tried that before.

I just updated to the current version of All In One Security & Firewall and tried it again. All plugins except this one were disabled. Same results. The page says “WHOIS lookup successfully completed. Please see the results below:”, but there are no results.

It doesn’t appear to be a plugin conflict. All my sites use Studio Press responsive themes. I thought perhaps CSS was preventing the display, but I don’t see anything in the page code that tells me the results are getting generated. For example, I can plug in an IP address for a spammer in Turkey, but do not find the word ‘Turkey’ anywhere in the resulting HTML code.

My GoDaddy configuration looks like this:

    Plugin Version : 4.0.8
    WP Version : 4.5.1
    WPMU: No
    MySQL Version : 5.5.45
    PHP Version : 5.4.45
    PHP Memory Limit : 256M
PHP Max Script Execution Time : 30 Seconds

Are there any specific PHP extensions that need to be compiled with PHP in order for a WHOIS lookup to work?

This is just for testing purposes. What operating system are you using? And what Browser versions do you have installed?

    Thread Starter WPDogger

    (@wpdogger)

    Windows 7 and FireFox 47.0.

I think the WHOIS request is being blocked by GoDaddy.

    The real questions are:

    1) Is anyone else experiencing the same issue with GoDaddy?

    2) Is the WHOIS lookup working for anyone using GoDaddy for hosting?

    (@mbrsolution)

Hi, have you spoken to GoDaddy about this issue?

    Thread Starter WPDogger

    (@wpdogger)

    Yes, I mentioned that above.

The tech at GoDaddy had no idea why the WHOIS lookup does not work.

I think it’s a server configuration issue because a PHP utility I have on my server that does WHOIS lookups is also not working since I moved my sites to GoDaddy. Something is likely blocking the call.

I am afraid this is beyond us and we cannot help you with your Server settings.
