Why are most auto meth descriptions too long?

    Hi,

    If I check my meta descriptions generated by this plugin – they are most of the time way too long.
    If there an option to limit the length to the recommended 160 chars of the page excerpt automatically? Or is this not needed anymore?

    @mdempfle we don’t have a specific character limit because search engines trim the description to where they need it to be themselves and that way we also have enough content when a search engines experiments with longer descriptions like Google did some time ago. We do truncate the description at some point if it gets too large just so that it doesn’t bloat the HTML document.

    Is it possible to add an optional setting to trim auto-generated descriptions to a given number of characters?
    In addition to Google, there is also Yandex. It is not known how much the size of the description parameter in the Yandex search engine affects the ranking.

    @theansi you can only do so through our filter hook. You can detect the user agent for instance and act accordingly. But there really isn’t any good reason for you to do so since search engines will automatically truncate your description to the length they need it to be.
