I don’t understand the point of the message “can be backordered” unless an item is out of stock.

Can someone please explain why it says this, it seems very confusing for customers. Of course it makes sense if out of stock to say “out of stock can be be back ordered,” but then there is no text at all! Seems crazy to me.

This problem is three years old, why has nothing been done with it?

  • Hello,

I don’t understand the point of the message “can be backordered” unless an item is out of stock.

This is to notify your customers that they can order the product even if it’s out-of-stock. If you prefer not to show the “can be backordered” message, choose “Allow” under Products > Edit Product > Product Data > Inventory > Allow backorders?

Alternatively, you can change the text using a plugin like Loco Translate:

    Hi @kaytellehoelgmailcom

We’ve not heard back from you in a while, so I’m marking this thread as resolved. If you have further questions, please feel free to open a new topic.

The issue that I have with it is that IF you set it to just “allow” then when your quantity gets to zero, it doesn’t tell the customer it is out of stock. It just doesn’t say anything. And if you set it to allow, can be back ordered, then when the item is in stock it tells the customer “in stock, can be back ordered.” I’ve had countless phone calls asking if an item is in stock when it says that because they get confused. What I feel should happen, is that when the item is in stock it should simply say in stock. Then, once the item quantity reaches zero, the “allow, but notify customer” should kick in so that they see “out of stock, can be back ordered.”
