Why can't I add itemscope and itemtype to category template

Hi there, I have found that there is some disagreement on how to show the breadcrumb list based on the schema.org website.
From what I have read here https://stackoverflow.com/questions/10120096/how-to-implement-schema-org-markup-for-a-breadcrumb by Rowe Morehouse, we do need to add the following attributes for it to be correct.
I want to know how I can add the attributes: itemscope and itemtype=”https://schema.org/ListItem” to my li tag in the category taxonomy. I am using bcn_display() to show the breadcrumbs.
When I add them, and press save, they are removed.
