Why can't I comment on other WP blogs?

  • This isn’t about WP blogs I have installed, but rather other peoples’.

    Whenever I try to leave a comment on a WP blog, it just doesn’t show up. It’s not being held in moderation, I know that’s not the issue. I can’t figure it out.

    If the blog owner has comments set up with the WP login, I’m fine. But if it’s the type where you put in name, email, and website, it just doesn’t work.

    How do you know it’s not being held in moderation?

    The odds are you’ve been blocked by their spam tools. You’ll have to ask each site what’s going on.

    Because these are all blogs I’ve commented on before. And I’ve asked the owners. They don’t know.

    Ask them if your posts are showing up in the SPAM list.

    And after I post the comment, the URL will be a link to that comment, which isn’t actually there.

    Again, ask if your posts are showing up in the spam list.

    But this is a problem with those sites. There’s a possibility you’ve been caught by Akismet (though as you’re posting here, it’s less likely). You could drop a line here https://akismet.com/contact/ and see if they can help.

    I just tested it with a friend’s blog, and no comment showed up anywhere. Not in her spam or in pending comments. Nowhere.

    And I just tested on a blog that has moderation, and it gave me the message that the comment was awaiting moderation.

    What plugins is your friend running? Can they turn them all off for you to test?

    (You could try on your own site, by turning off plugins, logging out and seeing if you can comment)

    It’s not just her blog, though. I can comment just fine on my own site, and the others I run.

    Oh well. I guess I just won’t comment on blogs anymore.

    Then it’s not your account, it’s something endemic to those sites, and it’s hard to fix without being able to look at the various plugins etc on those sites :/

    Well, turns out if I put a different URL in the “website” field, the comment will go through. (Fortunately, I have a URL that redirects to my main site.) But now the question is, what is up with my URL that it causes my comments to be blocked, or whatever?

    Two jump into my mind right away.

    1) Your URL is on the blacklist of that site
    2) Your URL is being caught by akismet

    For 1, ask the site “Hey, is my domain on your blacklist?”

    For 2, ping https://akismet.com/contact/ and ask them.
