• Hi. I was using Ixion for a site that was hosted by wordpress. I want to also use it for a site that is self-hosted. I went to “Add Themes” and was surprised that Ixion doesn’t show up when I search for it in wordpress’s theme listings. Is it only optimized to work with being hosted on wordpress? I’m not a professional developer just a volunteer for a non-profit, and don’t want to mess anything up. I downloaded Ixion and uploaded it as a zip, but just curious why it doesn’t show up when searched for even though it’s from wordpress’s parent company? Thank you.

  • Hi there,

I can see Ixion in the search results if I search at wp-admin/theme-install.php?search=ixion on my site.

That search pulls results from the theme directory at https://www.ads-software.com/themes/, so if a theme is listed there, it should also be discoverable if you search for it in WP-Admin. If a particular theme that should show up there doesn’t, it could indicate a problem with the themes search feature, but that would be something for the Core, and/or maybe the Themes team to look into, and not something that we as the theme authors can help with – we can only help with this specific theme, not with how the WordPress software handles themes in general.

If you connect your site to WordPress.com via the Jetpack plugin, you’ll also be able to search for and install this theme at WordPress.com ->My Site ->Design ->Themes.

Just to clarify, Automattic is not WordPress’s parent company.

Automattic belongs to one of the co-creators of WordPress, and a significant portion of our staff contribute to the open source WordPress software. But WordPress belongs to the community here on www.ads-software.com and is managed by the non-profit WordPress Foundation. Automattic and the WordPress.com platform was only created after WordPress itself, and we’re just one of many companies using and contributing to this open source project.

You can find some more details on this here:

I had just read the parent company thing in an article I found, thank you for clarifying that that is not the case.
One other issue – I am finding there are more options I can edit when I use Ixion on a wordpress hosted site. I have access to change the font, and choose from palettes. When I go to theme options on my self-hosted site using the same theme, the palettes are not available and when I try to change the font I’m told I don’t have permission.

I want to make our self-hosted site look like this:
    https://highlandparkheritagetrust.wordpress.com/

At the moment, highlandparkheritagetrust.org uses our old custom theme because when I activate Ixion I’m barely able to change anything. I can only change the header text color, and not even the font.

That is correct. The color and font options you see on WordPress.com are WordPress.com-specific features, not features of the theme itself.

To change the font on your site you can use a plugin like Easy Google Fonts.

For color changes you’ll need to use CSS. Depending on what exactly you want to change we might be able to help you with the code you’ll need here, but we’ll preferably need to see your site with the theme active to help with that. I can figure out the code on a test site as well, but it’s best to work out CSS for the exact site where it will be used, as plugins and existing CSS on your site would have an impact on what code is needed for further changes.
