    We use the Paypal Express payment gateway. We often find active memberships that have not paid for several months and the suscription appear paused on Paypal.

    We have found many active memberships that have had their Paypal subscription paused for more than 6 months.

    Why doesn’t the system cancel or pause memberships in this situation? Why don’t you even have that option?

    We have to be all the time controlling unpaid subscriptions in Paypal to cancel them manually.

    The system should automatically cancel or pause the membership on the first unsuccessful payment attempt. But it doesn’t even offer a way to see which members are in that situation.

    For us this is clearly a big bug.

    I’m sorry to hear about this issue you are facing.

    PayPal needs to cancel the subscription to trigger the cancellation inside Paid Memberships Pro as the paused subscription status doesn’t send an IPN notification to Paid Memberships Pro.

    We try to cancel failed payments immediately, as we set this up during the subscription creation when a member is checking out in Paid Memberships Pro.

    I would need more information about your site and subscriptions, please remember these are public forums so do not share any logins or sensitive information.

    Can you tell me the following:

    * What version of Paid Memberships Pro are you using?
    * What date did these subscriptions get created – would you consider these ‘old’ members that have been around for a while?

    I also recommend reaching out to PayPal support to see if they can skip the paused subscription status when it fails and instead rather cancel immediately – which should then trigger the cancellation process inside Paid Memberships Pro.

    I have a similar issue, I receive no notification of a paused, cancelled or payment failure at all.
