Why don't 775 permissions work?

    Hi there,

    The following is the directory listing for the data directory for WP Google Maps:

    drwxrwsr-x 2 apache apache 4096 Jul 18 10:37 wp-google-maps

    As you can see, it’s writable by “apache”, yet the plug-in complains, “File permissions:2775 – The plugin does not have write access to this folder. Please CHMOD this folder to 755 or 777, or change the location”.

    I’ve seen other posts which suggest CHMODing to 777, but this is an insecure cop-out. Is WP Google Maps actually trying to write and failing, or is it just reading the permissions and not smart enough to realise it can actually write to the directory?

    Hi Craig
    Thanks for letting us know about this. The plugin needs to identify that “2775” is the same as “775”. We’ll change this ASAP.

    Just one quick question, do you markers actually show up on the map?

    Hi there,

    Thanks for your reply. I’ve asked the client who is using the plug-in and they responded that they didn’t try to save any markers because they assumed it wouldn’t work. When they tried to they still get an error message similar to the above, but then it also says, “Your marker location has been saved.” However, the URL they gave me for the map does not work (404 error), so I need to wait for another reply to see for myself.

    If it has indeed been saved then any bug is just an informational one, rather than a functional one. I’ll post a follow-up when I hear back from the client, and hopefully mark this as solved.

    Update: Just realised that the client had sent me the log-in information for their blog, so I tried it myself and was able to add a marker.

    So the issue is just with the display of the error message. Saving the markers still works.
