Why am I getting ?amp=1 at the URL end instead of /amp/

Thank you for contacting us, ?amp=1 is the default and recommended structure since it doesn’t conflict with other rewrite rules. it also makes sure that users don’t get a 404 error when the AMP plugin is deactivated. that being said the default URL structure should not create any issues while indexing the site.

However, you can change the URL structure to /amp/ using AMP->Paired URL structure setting of AMP plugin.

I have understood your explanation.

However, I am wondering why this issue did not arise earlier while using genesis theme?

During that time I correctly had the /amp/ slug at end of the URLs.

Also, in the existing situation can I continue with the ?amp=1 structure for my URLs?

Do I have to redirect all my pages to this structure, or will Google automatically find the AMP version and index them with the ?amp=1 structure even if I don’t use the redirect?

I am not sure about the reason for behaving different on diffrent themes, maybe it was selected in settings before to be /amp/ somehow.

JFI: when you delete the AMP plugin, it will remove all the data including the setting stored for the URL structure.

If you removed the AMP plugin a long time ago (1-2 months back) and now you are re-installing it, then you can use the ?amp=1 query parameter. it is recommended as it will not fail even if you remove AMP after some time.
Also, make sure that you don’t have /amp/ URLs listed on GSC.

if you recently removed the AMP (1 month) plugin and re-installing it now, you can use your previous /amp/ structure otherwise GSC will start reporting 404 errors.

No, you don’t need to add a redirect, When Googlebot crawls your non-AMP pages (the normal site without ?amp=1 or /amp/) it will look for <link rel="amphtml"> tag on the non-AMP page and index that page as AMP page.

Problem is solved now.

Although, ?amp=1 is the recommended structure I prefer /amp/ structure since I do not want to have 404 not found in my GSC.

So as per your advice, I could change the ?amp=1 structure to /amp/ through AMP->Paired URL structure setting of AMP plugin.
