widget areas blank in admin/appearance/widgets

  • I searched using several different parameters and couldn’t find a solution to my problem so here goes…

    I have a website with a registered sidebar and two widget areas in that sidebar. However, when I go to appearance–>widgets in the admin area, the two widget areas show blank. How can I keep them populated with the widgets placed there? My functions.php file has the following code:
