• Hi WP-Community,

Today, I noticed that my widget settings are not working properly. They woudldn’t load and I kept getting errors. At first I was afraid that my site was hacked but then I thought it may be due to the new update to wp 5.8.

So, I downloaded a plugin to downgrade my wp version to 5.7 and now the issue seems to be fixed. Has anyone else encountered the same problem? And has WordPress already commented on this issue?

Would love to know when I can expect this to be fixed.

    Thanks guys!

  • Block widgets is the new addition in WordPress 5.8

You can use classic widget plugin, until you familiarise yourself with new block widgets.

Thank you for your quick reply. However, I think there is still an issue because when I click on the widget settings in my wordpress sidebar, the widgets don’t even load – meaning I can not use them, change them etc.

I don’t think this is normal. Hope WordPress will fix this soon…

Have you tried using default 20ish theme to check if it’s not your theme related bug?

I had similar ‘invisible’ areas when first accessing the new look block widget area and eventually it loaded. I’m sorry, but I just cannot understand how to use any of the block editors and keep having to revert to classic styles. The widget area is no exception. Even when the blocks showed up, all of my available widget choices (formerly on the left side) could not be found – so like others, I have had to download the plugin for classic widgets. I don’t see why I have to add another plugin which will further slow down my WP site. I tried using the option on the block widget page to switch to classic, but it didn’t change anything. I just feel like WordPress keeps fixing things that aren’t broken.

I am also having similar issues with my site as it has problems loading. From time to time the Website appears to be unresponsive and will not load. The Widgets area displays Errors and despite using the Classic Widget Editor there is nothing that will stop the site from malfunctioning.

Here is one of the Errors that I got and only after the Update to WordPress 5.8
The “custom_html” block was affected by errors and may not function properly. Check the developer tools for more details.

I don’t have any issue using the new widget layout, once I found that the plus sign opened up the widgets list, but I can’t get my widgets to save, it just spins. I tried activating the default theme, that didn’t fix the issue, then I deactivated all the plugins, that didn’t fix the issue either. I think I’m going to have to go back to 5.7 until the problem gets fixed.

    Hi,
I have the same issue since I updated WordPress. The widget administration loads and creates errors.

This “block widget” update is borderline unusable. It’s slow, clunky, and tedious to work with.

Serious question. Do you guys do any quality control before you release this stuff? Because this is terrible.

Similar issues here. Some “custom html” widgets working normally, but others containing a shortcode won’t work (the public page shows the shortcode as text).

The same shortcode works if it’s inside a “text editor widget” (but the “custom html” widget is needed to correctly manage a couple of manually set <p> paragraphs, that the editor widget would ignore and erase).

In this case, migrating to the new and fancy blocks system is not an option, it’s a large and old website that just worked fine.

It takes a long time to load. I waited 10 minutes for my widgets to load when trying to change some text on one of them.

Ditto on widget issues after upgrading to 5.8. When trying to edit a Visual Editor widget, there’s no editable field displayed. And in the righthand sidebar under “Block” I see the following:
“Legacy Widget Display a legacy widget.
    Visual Editor
Arbitrary text or HTML with visual editor”

Worse yet, the content on pages (besides the homepage) is not rendering at all!

It’s definitely an issue and I can’t update it easily. A lot of bugs in the widgets. Errors, can’t get things to show in the sidebar, sluggish and delayed typing. And I’ve tried from multiple sites and browsers and running into these issues all over.

    Hello,

I just noticed the same issue my widgets don’t load and it tells me that widget blocks were affected by errors. I recently updated to version 5.8.1 Is there any update on how to fix it please?

The best solution to the Widget issue, so far, is to add the Plugin ‘Classic Widgets’. It just converts everything back to the way it was – problem solved.
