Widget page blank

System info:
Apache version 2.2.8 (Unix)
PHP version 5.2.6
MySQL version 5.0.45-community-log
Operating system Linux at Bluehost and a fresh clean install of WordPress 2.5.1 using SimpleScripts and the default. On activating more than x plugins, the widget page goes blank. Depending on which combinations of plugins I install, I can have more or less plugins activated at a time.
Each plugin seems to work ok on its own: If I deactivate all plugins, and then only activate one plugin, configure it and test everything, there are no problems and the widget page is normal. As soon as I start activating multiple plugins, a treshold seems to exist after which the widget page becomes inaccessible. I have tried various configurations and it does not seem to be related to any specific plugins being incompatible.
At some stage in the whole process I also get the message %BEG_OF_TITLE% xxx %END_OF_TITLE% on the sidebar menu at the left on the widget page. This is not reproducible, sometimes it happens sometimes not. I have to disable a plugin to let it go away.
Extensive searches showed various possible treatments, ranging from purging and disabling browser cache, switching off javascript and wrong upgrade. Been there, done that, many time.
I can’t find anything in the logs that indicate a problem. Any recommendations on an approach to solve the problem?
