This article (https://townsquaredelaware.com/2018/10/15/new-fund-honoring-speakman-legacy-to-support-education-wellness/) is showing up in our Trending widget (created with WordPress Related Posts) incorrectly. It’s on our home page as well as across the website.

To start, the image it’s using as the featured image is wrong. That image did not come from us and is not the featured image attached to the post. Also, the headline for that article is not clickable as the rest of the articles are in the Trending widget.

What is preventing this post from showing up correctly and how can it be fixed?

    Hi @sescacca,

I’m not near a computer right now so I can’t check your site right away.

    With that being said:

(…) the image it’s using as the featured image is wrong. That image did not come from us and is not the featured image attached to the post.

Got a couple of questions for you:

    • Is this the original featured image that was set up with the post at the time of publishing, or was it changed afterwards to the one being on display now?
    • Are you using a CDN to serve your site’s images?

(…) the headline for that article is not clickable as the rest of the articles are in the Trending widget.

That’s the expected behavior. It wouldn’t make much sense to display a link to the currently-in-view popular post since the visitor is already on said page. That’s the reason why it doesn’t have a link, the user doesn’t need it.

(Hope that made sense. I have a terrible headache right now and I’m having a hard time translating my thoughts into English, so please accept my apologies in advance if you didn’t quite understand what I wrote above.)

    Hi Hector,

    Appreciate such a quick response!

You’re correct about the link on that page. That was my mistake.

Regarding the image, I had to check with my client, so I apologize for the delay. The image that’s in the Trending section now is a featured image from an article they published a long time ago on the site (about an actress). It was never assigned as the featured image of this particular article, so it should have no association with it.

As for your question about images, they are using Cloudflare CDN, but images are all hosted within WordPress and the server.

    Thanks for your help,

    Suzanne

    Hey Suzanne,

Regarding the image, I had to check with my client, so I apologize for the delay.

Don’t worry about it, I know what that’s like (and I usually don’t expect quick replies from users anyways, I generally assume that we’re on different timezones :P)

You’re correct about the link on that page. That was my mistake.

I was thinking about it last night and while my response above makes sense (“user doesn’t need the link”), there are some instances where it’s perfectly valid to display it. I might add a setting for this so users can change this behavior on a future release.

The image that’s in the Trending section now is a featured image from an article they published a long time ago on the site (about an actress). It was never assigned as the featured image of this particular article, so it should have no association with it.

That’s odd… but should be easy to fix. Try this:

    1. Go to Settings > WordPress Popular Posts > Tools.
    2. Under Thumbnails, click on Empty image cache.
    3. That’s it!

This will have WPP rebuild all popular posts thumbnails.

As for your question about images, they are using Cloudflare CDN, but images are all hosted within WordPress and the server.

If the above doesn’t fix the issue with the thumbnail, try clearing Cloudflare’s Cache.

Thanks, Hector. Looks like the cache clearing didn’t work, so we’ll have to get in touch with Cloudflare. Appreciate your help!

Got it. Please keep me posted with the results, if that doesn’t fix it either then we’ll have to dig a little deeper.

    Hi Hector,

Just so you and anyone else reading this thread knows how it was resolved, here is what we had to do:
    (1) paused cloudflare
    (2) connected to the server via ssh and deleted incorrect file
    (3) we also used the plugin’s more “destructive” cache-clearing “EMPTY CACHE” button that not only purges the image cache but also that of all the currently trending items (but did not use the plugin’s “CLEAR ALL DATA” button)
    (4) then after regenerating the thumbnails we got the correct one
    (5) then did a selective purge of the incorrect file at cloudflare before re-enabling.

    Thanks for your help!

    Hi Suzanne,

Thanks for reporting back. Glad to know things are working as expected now.

    (3) we also used the plugin’s more “destructive” cache-clearing “EMPTY CACHE” button that not only purges the image cache but also that of all the currently trending items (but did not use the plugin’s “CLEAR ALL DATA” button)

The problem was caching related, deleting WPP’s data was not really necessary.

Anyways, I’m marking this topic as resolved now. If there’s anything else I can help with don’t hesitate to ask, alright?
