widget works on pages but not single.php or archive.php

Using a theme I have never used before but it seems that everything is normal in single.php and archive.php, however the widget displays “No posts found.” on the these templates. I am trying to pull a specific category of a custom post type. Widget works great on page templates and index.php. Any ideas?
