I’ve set up a child theme to use as a secondary theme on my site (for visitors and members to choose from). However, even after configuring the widgets on both the child theme and the main theme, the widgets don’t show once the theme has been switched, they only show on the primary, active theme.

It sounds like a bug, will look into this and try to resolve any issue. In the meantime, if you want to help troubleshoot you can create a child theme for one of the WP default themes, and then try again with the widgets. Testing with the default themes can let us know if the issue may be theme-related or plugin related. Thanks for your help.

I tried Twenty Seventeen as a child theme, and the problem is still there. As soon as I change themes, all widgets on all themes now either disappear completely or are in the wrong places. ??

Alright, it must be a bug. Will investigate and try to resolve for the next update. Thanks for reporting.

Just to follow up with this.. After some investigation, it seems that when working on a switched theme (i.e., a theme that is active via Theme Switcha plugin), you can play with widgets and try them out, etc., but they will not be saved with the theme. So when theme switching is disabled, widgets will be forgotten.

To workaround this limitation, it is best to use the WP Theme Customizer to preview and configure widgets as desired, and then save changes and publish the theme directly from there. That way you can preview widgets and save them to the final published theme.

Note that widgets are the only thing that this applies to; everything else (e.g., template tags, CSS, JavaScript, settings, content, et al) works normally for themes enabled via Theme Switcha.

I hope this information helps, feel free to post again if needed or any questions! ??
