• Similar problem to others posted here. Widgets won’t drag in the appearance/widgets page. Cursor changes correctly when over the widgets, but when you try and drag, it selects text instead.

Have tried the screen options workaround: screen options doesn’t even activate.

Tried both Safari and IE browsers on Mac and Windows OS. Problem persists.

All plugins have been removed (not just deactivated). Problem persists.

    Reinstalled WordPress. Problem persists.

This is a box stock installation on a separate domain from our main website, doing nothing but running wordpress. Any other ideas about what could be causing the problem?

  • Try renaming the plugins folder via FTP and switching to the default theme.

That did not solve either problem.

I’m having the same problem here, even after re-installation. I’ve never gotten the standard drag & drop widget interface to work on any of the several WP 2.8 installs I’ve done, but this is the first time I haven’t been able to get the screen options workaround to work.

Does anyone else have any ideas how to get my widget management working? I’m severely frustrated here.

I’m in the same boat. The screen options drop down, doesn’t drop down. Drag and drop is also not working, obviously.
Default everything, no plugins installed. No default plugins activated. It’s not a plugin issue.

Installing the google libraries plugin worked a charm for me.

Also look at this thread (the fix repairs a number of admin-panel problems including the widget drag drop problem):

I’ve been having the same problem.

I’ve been experiencing the same problem on one of my installs but not any others. I can’t drag the widgets around in the dashboard and also I can’t add tags to any posts. This all started happening after I upgraded to 2.8.4 from the previous version.

Installing the Use Google Libraries plugin also worked for me.

Installing the Use Google Libraries plugin also worked for me. Now i can drag and drop again ??

    Hi,
I’m having the same issue with the widgets won’t drag.
Is there a particular library I should install? Do I need to do anything after it’s installed?
I installed “Use Google Libraries”, but that has not helped me so far.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

I upgraded to 2.9.x and had this problem immediately. However, the solution for me was to

    install google libraries plugin
Then deactivate a plugin called WP Mini Games from Mario Mansour.

After Deactivating this plugin, I was able to get my widgets screen operational again.

Thanks everyone for the tip about google libraries – this change alone has noticeably sped up my site. I am going to now add it to all my sites.
