• Before I run the installation of WordPress I’d just like some clarification.

The site that I’m about to install WordPress on has a large number of pages that are obviously not handled by WordPress. will they continue to work after I install WordPress?

  • Tony:

are the pages that you currently have in HTML format .. or are you upgrading from a previous verison of WP?

if you are upgrading the links should stay ..

if you are installing WP into the sites root directory and all the pages are HTML .. the links will still be there .. you will just have to copy and paste them into a page or past in WP ..

other WP users .. am I correct in my thinking?

Are you installing WP in the root?
Even so, they should work, since posts and Pages created by WP do not have extension, so I don’t see any conflict here.

Suppose, you have an existing page called whatever, so it is
    example.com/whatever.html
Your WP posts will llok like
    example.com/?p=123 or
    example.com/?page_id=321 (for Pages)
and even using the “nice” permalinks it will be
example.com/whatever (in case you give it the same title).
(Not entirely sure though how it would work in this case: when an existing file has the same name as the new one created in WP…)

Sorry I should have explained a bit more, the existing pages are not managed by WordPress, it is a first time installation.

However, many of the pages are created with MIVA software so an example real URL would be:

    https://domain.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=SP&Product_Code=delint14

It only just occured to me that this might cause a problem and I’m very worried about it.

I was going to install it in the root, but if that will cause a problem I can do it in domain.com/wordpress if that will help.

the existing pages are not managed by WordPress

That was absolutely clear from your first post – I was just trying to show a few possible scenarios.
If you can install it in a subdir, that would be a much cleaner solution: all files in the same place, not scattered among other files in the root, and avoiding any possible conflicts.

Okay great thanks for all the advice Pastor and moshu, I’ll definitely be installing it in a subdirectory to avoid any possible conflicts.

Tony … glad I could help with what little I know of WP .. and most credit should go to Moshu …

please update us on the installation and let us see a link to your site when you get it installed.

    God Bless,
