I get the feeling that the password protection does not work reliably when using a caching plugin.

I test it in different browsers, incognito mode, etc. and it is almost always loading and showing the password protected site.

So I wonder if caching could be an issue here?

  • Yeah, not working for me either on a site on Cloudways using the Breeze caching plugin. I didn’t see a way to exclude the cookie from caching.

I am among others using Cloudways as well, but I did not use Breeze for a while. However, with WP Fastest Caching I was able to exclude bid_1_password_protected_auth cookie. That way it works. I did not see it that the Password Protect plugin is even mentioning it that there can be issues when there is caching.

Better solution (but less convenient) is of course .htaccess and htpasswd

    Thanks for the info markussss!

This is mentioned on the Password Protected plugin page:

Please note, this plugin works by setting a cookie to allow access to the site. If you are using a caching plugin or web hosting such as WP Engine that has in-built caching, you will need to configure the caching service to be disabled if the Password Protected cookie is set.

I ended up using http basic authentication.

Is the http basic authentication anyhow different from the password protection with .htaccess and htpasswd?

    No, they’re the same thing.

Got it … well then we have applied the same solution. I still use the plugin for some sites, but for others where I really want to be sure I also go for the http basic authentication approach
