• Hello,

I am using WP version 3.9.2 and I am planing to update it to the new version 4.0

Will this update affect my child theme ? will it restore all the modified files and css style sheet to the default original one ??

    Regards !!

  • Updating to 4.0 should not modify any Child Theme files, but there have been times (such as with Twenty Twelve a while back) when a WordPress theme gets updated and a Child Theme then needs a little more work to override a change in its parent.

Overall, as suggested by WordPress and to help guard against whatever, it is always best to do a complete site backup and a backup of your database prior to an update.

    thanks for your reply !!

I am trying to back up my website and I found a plugin for that, but the thing is that I know how to back it up but if I need to restore the back up !? I don’t really know how ??

    thanks !!

I use FileZilla and an SFTP connection to make a local (downloaded) backup of everything (folders and such) inside my WordPress installation, then use the same to upload directly back to the server whenever any of those files might need to be restored.

Dealing with your database, a separate matter, is at least just as important. Your cPanel at your server account at your host can be a great place for downloading database backups and storing them locally, then learn how to upload one back to your cPanel if you ever need to restore it. Some hosts will keep site and database backups for you, but I have discovered it best to have my own.
