• When WordPress 5 came out I was just shocked with how nonperformant the new editor was.

With 6 you have managed to make it even worse. It literally takes 10 seconds or more just to select a different spot on the page.

This is true regardless of operating system, hardware, website, plugins or complete lack of plugins. It’s just an absolutely poorly performing product.

Is there any intention to ever solve this problem? I assumed that surely, it would just be a matter of time, but with a new major release coming and making the most fundamental issue with Gutenberg even worse, I’m starting to think you just don’t care about the people who actually have to use this thing every day.

  • i can confirm this, with wp6 the performance is a big pain.
    please solve this problem

I can also confirm this. One you get a couple pages of text with a picture or two, every edit creates a freeze of at least several seconds. This is the worse it’s every been.

Hi there! This forum is for support with the standalone Gutenberg plugin. Could you all confirm that you’re running the Gutenberg plugin, and if so, what version of the plugin you’re running?

If you’re experiencing lag issues with the built-in block editor, and not the standalone plugin, please let me know that as well.

This will help me understand better how to proceed with troubleshooting. Thanks!

    Windows 10

Hi @moviedebuts, thanks for the prompt info, appreciate it! To help narrow down whether it’s the standalone plugin or WP core that’s causing the issue you’re experiencing, could you let me know:

    – Do you experience the same problem with the Gutenberg plugin deactivated? (The plugin is only needed to get the latest pre-release features, otherwise the block editor is built into core itself.) You can use the Health Check plugin if you’d prefer to deactivate it only on the back end, without affecting your live site.
    – Do you experience the issue with all plugins deactivated? Again, you can use Health Check for this. If you don’t experience the issue with plugins deactivated, please reactivate them one by one, testing in between each to note when the issue comes back.
    – Do you experience the same issue with a default theme active? Again, Health Check will let you do this on the back end only.

I disabled the plugin and found that the older plugin had none of the freezing problems. Well, I could have told you this anyway because the latest plugin immediately caused major freezing problems.

Right now I’m in very poor health and unable to do any further testing such as deactivating plugins, etc. I hope the others in this topic will be able to contribute more info for you.

I’ll monitor the topic and do more testing if I’m feeling better.

Hi @moviedebuts, thanks for confirming that deactivating the standalone Gutenberg plugin solved the issue. I send my best wishes for your health and really appreciate the offer to revisit with further testing if you’re able.

If anyone else would like to share their troubleshooting results, that would be very helpful. Thanks!

    hi @zoonini,
    i have the same settings:

Version 13.3.0 | By Gutenberg Team on Chrome
Chrome Version 102.0.5005.63 (Official Build) (64-bit)
    Windows 10
    https://www.urbanpresents.net

my blog has lot s of pictures, which are shown in the gutenberg editor.
i just created a new test-post, text editing etc is all fine, but when i start adding more pictures to the gallery the performance is bad. surely changing the grid (3 to 2 pictures a row) and activating the link brings a long freeze.

after installing the health plugin and having the troubleshoot function on, the editor is so amazingly fast, i cannot remember ever had such a fast wp-editor.

    hope this information helps.

I may have to take back what I said. I was using the development editor today and it started slowing down after I added 2-3 photos. It doesn’t seem as bad as the plugin but there is something going on there.

@kersavond – thanks for testing that. If the block editor is speedy in troubleshooting mode with all your plugins turned off, the next step would be to reactivate them one by one to see which is the plugin causing the slowdown.

@moviedebuts – thanks for the update. What do you mean by the “development editor”?

@zoonini I’m talking about the production version of Gutenberg. It doesn’t have some freezing but not as bad as the plugin.

But let me just say that I’m a content person, not a programmer. I wouldn’t know how to interpret the various tests you suggested.

Is anyone from Gutenberg working on this problem?

    I meant to say:

@zoonini I’m talking about the production version of Gutenberg. It DOES have some freezing but not as bad as the plugin.

@moviedebuts Thank you for the clarification, it’s helpful.

That’s OK – you don’t need to interpret any of the troubleshooting steps I mentioned!

Is anyone from Gutenberg working on this problem?

I’ve done some searching in the Gutenberg bug repository over in GitHub, but I couldn’t yet find any existing reports that quite match the freezing/slowness described here, nor have I been able to replicate it yet on a test site, which is why I’ve been asking the folks who chimed in here in this forum thread for as much information as possible about when the issue occurs. I also spoke to one of the Gutenberg issue “triagers” (someone who’s very familiar with all the current bugs and issues) and this did not ring any bells for them.

I’m still interested in what you said here, as it’s a big clue:

after installing the health plugin and having the troubleshoot function on, the editor is so amazingly fast, i cannot remember ever had such a fast wp-editor.

When you’re in troubleshooting mode, all your plugins are temporarily deactivated. If the block editor is speedy in troubleshooting mode and doesn’t freeze up or lag, that’s a good sign. It means that one (or possibly more) of your plugins might be somehow interfering with the editor, causing the freezing. The trick is to figure out which plugin that might be.

In troubleshooting mode, you can try reactivating your plugins one at a time. After reactivating each plugin, test the editor again, and see if it lags/freezes. If it’s speedy and zippy but suddenly bogs down again when you reactivate a certain plugin, then it may be that this specific plugin has an issue with the editor in WP 6.0. I’d be interested to hear the results of this kind of testing, when/if you’re able. Thanks!

@moviedebuts @kersavond @frogdesk, could you also please let me know if this issue only occurs with Gallery blocks, or other types of blocks as well?

And how many images you have in a Gallery block before the freezing/lag starts?

    Thanks!

I don’t use any blocks as far as I know. I insert images directly to the gallery.
