• Hi,

    WIWINWIG= what I want is not what I get…

When writing a Page or Post in dashboard, I have one long-time issue that’s driving me to distraction, and I can not find the solution. If I let the text automatically wrap-around to the next line, as in this text box, I always get a line-spacing exactly like the text you’re reading. But,

When I hit the ‘Return’ Key, I automatically get a double space. Frequently I want to design my information in a particular way, especially if I’m ‘centering’ it.

I’m in the early stages of a complete website redesign and I’m re-writing a lot of Posts & Pages.

I’d really appreciate any helpful input, even a writing resource if there is such a thing.

    Thanx,
    Tom

In any web page (not just within WordPress), this needs to be carried out using CSS – not by inserting new lines or spaces into your content. Web browsers simply do not work that way and neither do web editors.

    Hi esmi,

I haven’t talked to you for a very long time. You actually answered some questions for me when I 1st got going with WP. Now to be clear with your comment…

I always thought the visual tab of the Dashboard was similar to working with a typical text editor like Pages on my Mac. But you’re saying it isn’t…hmmm.

Do I really have to go into css for every Page-n-Post I create? I just don’t have that skill. But, can I create a document in Pages for example, then copy-paste into the Dashboard? And if I do, does it retain the style or formatting?

What’s been happening esmi, is that often I settle for what’s produced which may not be what I want. So how can I proceed?

    Thanx once again,
    Tom

    But you’re saying it isn’t

Pages is a word processor – not a web editing tool.

Do I really have to go into css for every Page-n-Post I create?

If formatting changes are needed on every page, then you should probably be looking at amending your theme’s existing CSS – possibly via a child theme or a custom CSS plugin.

can I create a document in Pages for example, then copy-paste into the Dashboard? And if I do, does it retain the style or formatting?

No – that will never work and could, in some situations, wreck your site or even stop it working at all on some browsers.

By the sounds of it, your theme’s CSS needs tweaking so that most of this is taken care of automatically. Or you need to perhaps look for another, better, theme that’s more suited to your needs. What theme are you using?

    Morning esmi,

The last time we corresponded was over 3 yrs back and I was in LA. For the past year I’m living in Tokyo with an eye on creating a biz for Asia. Hence the website redux and the time delay in corresponding with you.

My new theme is a combo Genesis + Child theme. Working with this is vastly different than the experience I’ve had working with the WP free theme I used for 3 years. But it’s a good thing as I’m the wiser for it.

Yes you’re correct about Pages, I should have said Text Edit in Mac. Can I safely use Text Edit to create a Page, then upload it without breaking the site? Does the text formatting arrive in tact?

Actually, working in the Dashboard now is identical to working in my previous free theme. So I was not surprised when this double space situation appeared again.

I’ve been wondering about the Dashboard Box that sez: Format. It includes Paragraph, Address, preformatted, H1, H2, etc. I don’t know, and never did understand how to use it. Can you point me to a resource that will guide me to using it properly? That may provide some answers to getting the results I’m looking for.

    Thanx,
    Tom

Thanx again for your assistance, I believe I’ll need to ferret out the information elsewhere.
