Woocommerce CSV importer/exporter schema

    I am trying to thoroughly understand the Woocommerce CSV importer/exporter before trying to explain it to my future vendors. I noticed in the schema under sku that it says; Required. Auto-generated if missing. I have tested this out and I cannot ascertain where and when this auto-generation occurs. It seems like it doesn’t work. This will be confusing for the vendors as it is for me. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • Interesting – I’ve been regularly using the CSV import function since it was added and quite often not having an SKU and it’s always imported without an issue.

    Just tried it on a test site and, yes, products with no SKU import fine. I also tried without the SKU column – and they import OK too!

    @seank123 thanks for your reply. Sorry, I don’t have any problem with the importer. It imports with or without the sku just fine. It is the wording in the schema under notes for sku I have a problem with. It states that the sku is required and if one is not provided the system will auto-generate one. The auto-generate of a product sku is what is not happening. People will expect this to happen if it states that it will.

    I understand what you are saying.

    I was testing that feature on my testing site that is using Storefront theme and WooCommerce Core. Let’s say the column SKU is present in the file but empty, in this case the product will not contain SKU, I am assuming that the SKU being added is empty because this is what the file says.

    On the other hand, if the file does not have a SKU column then WooCommerce will auto generate the SKU field once the product is imported.
