woocommerce products category vs. page

Hi there,

Recently I am starting to try things out with Woocommerce and had a generic question. I understand that there is a something called “product category”. In the theme I have, the product category page all products will be shown for a certain category. Why have people chosen for this setup? To make my life simple I created a page, which will then appear in the menu. This page shall include a menu on the side for sub categories and the people can then filter.
What is technically the difference between my suggestion and the product category setup? Will my setup cause problem down the line? I tried searching for this on the Internet but found nothing.
