we will update the plugin asap and hope to fix that behavior with the next update

The PayPal vaulting API currently does not support creating tokens for zero-sum transactions, that’s why free trials currently don’t work with PayPal Payments.
We are looking at options to work around this until PayPal has implemented the functionality in the vaulting API.
Until then, you could only either add a small sign-up fee to the initial order or alternatively enable $0 Initial Checkout in the WooCommerce Subscription settings. The customer would then need to manually pay upon the first renewal to create a token for subsequent automatic renewals.
