• WooCommerce Subscriptions is making our site noticeably slow, anywhere from 3 to 8 second delay on a normal page load. Without it on, it’s like 1-2 seconds. Easy to reproduce. Turn it off – fast. Turn it on – slow. We only have under 100 active subscriptions and users.

New Relic shows a staggering amount of function calls from WooCommerce Subscriptions compared to bbPress or Ultimate Member or WooCommerce Memberships or Yoast SEO – the other plugins running. It’s basically maxing out the CPU on the server with only a couple vistiors.

Here’s a image of the function call usage graphed:

Is this normal for this plugin? It seems very high.

Are there known issues with it and other plugins mentioned above?

  • I have tried WC and WCSubs with TwentySixteen WP theme and it still slows to a crawl.

I have deactivated Subscriptions and reactivated that it seems to be adding further delay in page loads – particularly for the Products page on the front and back end of the site.

I guess the situation will only get worse with every WooSubscriptions update then?!

I’m talking 180 seconds before the products page now loads with WooSubs activated.

Breathe out I’m doing this on a staging site. This morning the delay was 10 seconds plus.

Sending in a ticket to WooThemes and will let you know the outcome.

    Steve,

Just wondering if you heard anything from WooThemes on this issue. We are experiencing the same thing. I ran a P3 profiler and Subscriptions is definitely hogging most of the resources.

I did try installing their plugin fix that @heliocles pointed out and that did reduce the issue for us. (WooCommerce itself is now creating most of the slowdown is there another issue there I’m not aware of?)

@mystyleplatform We are using W3 Total Cache and so far have not experienced any problems with subscription billing. But I will let you know if that changes.

    Hello,

I’m having exactly the same issue. It’s been a week that i’m trying to figure out why my CPU Usage is so high without being able to. I even upgraded my hosting because I can’t find the reason behind.

I got my first subscribers just before my CPU went crazy. Do you guys have any updates from Woocommerce regarding this issue?

    I will also contact them.

    Thank you

I have not heard anything from WooCommerce Subscriptions. We are still having the issue as well. We tried the code as mentioned by @heliocles and it certainly worked to stop the problem (which also proves there is a problem). However, our next two recurring billings failed. I am unsure whether the code had anything to do with it. We are working on a way to test it now. But I wish they would just fix it.

If you hear anything @ inovacrea I would love to know.

We are still running W3 Total Cache, @mystyleplatform, and all is well.

Just thought I’d express my frustration as well. I have a site with 2000 users and 800 active subscriptions. I’ve been experiencing a very slow back-end of the site and decided to try and ‘smoke out the skunk’

I disabled all plug-ins, and activated woocommerce. Still Ok
Activated Woocommerce subscriptions and things ground to a halt.

Page load time of Users page before activating WC subs: 3 seconds
Page load time of Users page after activating WC subs: 20 seconds

    Same problem…

I’m running a pure SSD dedicated server with about 30 sites total. It’s taking 3.5-4.5 seconds with no cache.

I emailed Woo just now to show my frustration. :/

Woo directed me to this page:
    https://docs.woocommerce.com/document/subscriptions-query-monitor-warning/

If you’re not running depreciated hooks, download the plugin, and it’ll speed your site up. Mine is normal now!

    Cheers,
    Joseph

Hello, did you notice any issues with subscriptions or payments failing after using this plugin. I don’t even know how to check if I have any depreciated hooks anyway. And I am concerned installing this plugin may break something.

    @neverthejetsetter,

If you’re using a purchased theme, contact the author. I’m using this plugin for multiple sites, however, the message above applied for the ‘Jobify’ theme. The author did not add any code related to Subscriptions, so I’m good to go.

I have not tested myself, as the site is still in development.

    I suggest you:

    1. Create a new Subscription for $1
    2. Set renewal for one day
    3. Test with real money
    4. Hide from catalog immediately after your purchase (so real customers don’t see it)

We did test this using a version of the test mentioned above and everything worked fine. So we currently have the plugin fix installed and it is helping.

I also heard back from WooCommerce Subscriptions and they said this fix will no longer be required as of Subscriptions v2.1.

We did try this plugin. And I feel that it even made the site slower. So we turned it off. Does that make any sense?

Did you use a query test to see how much time each plugin is taking on your site? Don’t assume, get definitive proof.

    @dano2, Glad it helped.

What query test do you suggest? I have used P3, but it just shows a pie graph mostly taken up by Woocommerce Subscriptions.

    (@malibur)

I just want to say that I have the exact same problem. I went through the support on woo themes as well, and they just send me that link with the plugin for disabling deprecated hooks, which make very little difference on the 4 sites I have running with this plugin.

Its especially frustrating from a plugin that pretty much locks you in, as the whole point of the plugin is subscriptions. You don’t want to lose the existing subscriptions, but the plugin got REALLY slow on the update to 2.0.

I really hope they will tell us some plan to improve this in the future.
