Wordfence 7.0.1 Causing Performance Problems

    To date I’ve not had any performance problems with my site but, this afternoon started to get intermittent database connection/reconnection errors.

    I checked via cPanel, phpmyAdmin and the host’s support system, that there wasn’t a genuine ongoing problem then remembered I’d upgraded Wordfence from the previous version to 7.0.1.

    I have now deactivated the Wordfence plugin (I also use Duo Two-Factor Authentication) and tested the site using two different browsers and confirmed that it’s running fine with no database connection errors in both logged in and visitor states.

    I would now like to downgrade back to the version prior to 7.0.1. to reinstate a decent level of security and wait for 7.0.1 to settle down before retrying. Until I do this Wordfence remains deactivated.

    I’m thinking about copying the Wordfence plugin files across from a demo site I set up a couple of weeks ago. As this is a security plugin I’m being cautious. Are there any caveats or instructions I may need?

    Have you checked your server error log file when you encountered this degraded performance issue? I wonder if there was any error message logged there at the same time.

    Also, I suggest trying a clean installation of Wordfence files and database tables, to do that, you can follow these steps:
    – With Wordfence plugin deactivated, install “Wordfence Assistant” plugin.
    – Click on “Delete all Wordfence Data and Tables” button in Wordfence assistant plugin.
    – Delete Wordfence directory via FTP.
    – Reinstall Wordfence via WordPress Dashboard and re-check this issue.

    P.S. You can download any of the plugin’s old versions from here (scroll down the page till “PREVIOUS VERSIONS”) but this isn’t recommended as you will lose the product support, only the recent version of the plugin is supported.
