Wordfence activity emails are displaying incorrectly. The received report looks like HTML text. What could be causing this?

I have tried to paste an image of an example but cannot get that to work.

Hi @phonyroyal, thanks for your message.

I can’t tell too much without seeing it, but there is a chance that your email software (or plugin if you use one for SMTP) is sending HTML emails as a Plain Text content-type if you’re just seeing code like that so that could be worth checking at your host or on your site.

If HTML email source is just being displayed instead of rendered as it should, the receiving mail client can be an issue too. It could be worth double-checking that wordpress@yoursite[dot]com is considered a safe source in case the HTML isn’t being rendered by the email client for that reason. Checking the headers of the received email for the content-type mentioned above may point to whether the site is sending it as plain text instead of HTML.

    Thanks,
    Peter.

Thanks Peter. That was enough to point me in the right diagnostic direction, and I have identified the cause as the “Check & Log Email” Plugin.

Someone else reported it on the plugin support page and the forum thread was closed, but the issue remains: https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/causes-html-emails-to-be-sent-as-plain-text/

It is easy to reproduce by installing the “Check & Log Email” Plugin, then on the plugin’s General tab select “Check this box if you would like override wordpress default from email and name” and send a Test Activity Report from WordFence.

It has been reported here: https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/html-emails-sent-as-plain-text-2/
