This should be ok, as I got the same message on akismet today, too.

When this happens, you can check the file on the Wordfence Scan page. You should see this same warning below the scan results, and there is a link you can use to compare the file to the official version.

Usually in any files ending in .txt, you will just see that the version number of WordPress supported by the plugin was changed. This happens when plugin authors update the file without officially releasing a new version of their plugin.

If that is the only change, then there is nothing wrong with your site. You can use the link to “restore” the original, which will update the file from www.ads-software.com automatically. (If there are more changes, or changes in other files that you don’t know how to handle, you can check with us here again!)

    That’s great, thanks Matt.

I have the same message about Akismet Readme.txt on several sites. However, when I check to see how the file has changed Wordfence reports no differences.

In addition, when I check setting for Akismet I get the message that my API key is no longer valid. I emailed Akismet support but just did so no info from them.

TerryN: The warning might have been produced before the latest Akismet update, which was just a few days ago. As long as the files show no differences now, it should be ok to click the link saying that you have fixed the issue.

I don’t know about the Akismet API key issue, but they do have a form to resend your key, that might be helpful:
    https://akismet.com/resend/

Or you may be able to just get a new key:
    https://akismet.com/wordpress/

    Thanks WFMattR:
Akismet apparently has changed policy without informing users. They now seem to require a paid subscription despite the fact they still advertise a free one. When I clicked on the resend API I got the API suspended message and when I tried to get a new API setup, even tho I clicked on FREE, I was taken to a page that asked for $.
