I have this Issue with uploading files that I want to share here, just in case somebody else has the same problem:

    problem for me exists with:
    – Coda 2 (as editor and ftp-client) –> probably will be the same problem with any other ftp-client, but I haven’t tried.
    – ftp-connection with ssl/tls
    – wordfence firewall activated

    what happens:
I upload a file (i.e. functions.php) via ftp (ssl/tls) – the file is being created on the server, but remains emtpy (zero KB).
For some reason this happens only with files bigger than 4KB.

    solution A)
Switching to unencrypted ftp-connection. Which is obviously not a good solution.

    solution B)
Deactivating Wordfence-Plugin while uploading files and turning it back on after uploads are done. This solution is also not quite handy.

Is there anyone else who had this problem and is there a more elegant and secure way to solve this?

Does anyone have a technical explanation why exactly this happens?

  • Hey @josialoos,

Sorry to hear you are having this issue and thanks for getting in touch. It sounds like there is something that you are doing that is triggering a rule in the Wordfence Firewall. Please try setting the Wordfence Firewall to “Learning mode” and repeat the action that was blocked. You can set this on the Firewall > Firewall Options page. When the blocked action is repeated, an entry should then be placed in the “Whitelisted URLs” section of the Firewall Options page. If you can see the entry being added there it should then be fine to set the Firewall back to “Enabled and protecting”.

Please let me know how it goes.

    Thanks,

    Gerroald

    Hey @josialoos,

We haven’t heard back from you in a while, so I’ve gone ahead and marked this thread as resolved.

Please feel free to open another thread if you’re still having issues with Wordfence.

    Thanks,

    Gerroald
