• Hi,

I am using Wordfence and until very recently it has been fine, except that it has become apparent that it’s been slowing my site down fairly considerably. That’s not the main problem though, my site is crashing a few times a day. I have been able de-activate the plugin but it will not allow me to delete it, I get this: “To perform the requested action, WordPress needs to access your web server. Please enter your FTP credentials to proceed. If you do not remember your credentials, you should contact your web host.” I never used to get that , so why now? Getting these details is not possible as my husband developed our main website with Microsoft.asp and it’s hosted on Azure with our WP blog and he is not willing to hand over our server log-in details. I have been getting this message intermitantly recently when trying to update plugins. I then wanted to take a back up of my site using WP clone and it now won’t let me do that either as I get this: Error Message : Unable to create the temporary backup directory, please make sure that PHP has permission to write into the D:/home/site/wwwroot/blog/wp-content/uploads/wp-clone/ directory.
Please help as i am currently tearing my hair out. My husband has removed the files from the server but Wordfence is still showing in my WP plugins.

    Hello,

Sorry to hear that you are having this trouble. You’re husband was right not to hand over his FTP credentials.

It may not be Wordfence that is causing your technical difficulties. Have you contacted Azure support detailing all of the problems that you have been having?

It is always a good idea to follow our guide below if you think that it may be due to a hack:

    Hi,
Few time ago i see my wordfence firewall it’s again on learning mod setting, then i set it on “enabled” and my website was often very very slow, it’s like every hour something slowdown it for few minute.

And, everytime, When i want to post a new message on WPforo forum, i must waiting a lot before page reload.

Then 2 day ago i remember my setting on Wordfence firewall, i stop it and now my website stop to be very slow.

    I don’t use live trafic.

I don’t know if it can be a problem with jetpack, because i use askimet and protect.

    Hello Pierrot,

If you could open a separate topic for yourself it prevents this topic becoming confusing for everyone involved. Many thanks.

    Hi wfphil

I have checked and our site does not seem to have been hacked but at least since de-activating the plugin, our site has not gone down but I am keeping an eye on it with Pingdom Alerts. If problems persist after we manage to remove the plugin altogether I will get my husband to contact Azure. We are able to remove it from the local version so once we promote that (hopefully tonight) it will be gone from the live version.

Just one further question I did have a lot of alerts in Wordfence saying that files in the plugins had been changed, is that normal? I’d never seen this until the last few weeks. I re-installed the plugins and these alerts did not go away so i just had to go down the list one by one to say I’d dealt with the problem and then they cleared. Could this have caused an issue?

    Hello,

As Azure is owned by Microsoft and looking at a Wikipedia entry it may be the case that the server operating system may be incompatible with Wordfence.

Our documentation states that we do not recommend using Wordfence on Windows/IIS platforms. Though we have reports of Wordfence working on IIS and other Windows web server platforms they are not officially supported.

With regards to the alerts about plugin file changes I suspect that it is due to the wider issues that you have been having which include at least one other plugin malfunctioning with directory permission issues on the server, i.e. WP Clone.
