• I just received the following reply from my hosting company. It is in response to a corrupted backup. Do you have any words of wisdom? I’m not sure I believe the diagnosis. Basically, the end result was that all of our backup files are corrupted. Our site has been severely damaged.
    —————
    The problem at hand was that the database xxxxx_wordpress was damaged and our backup tool stopped backing it up for this reason. The same is observed with the xxxxx_testing_wordpress database at the moment:
    Code:
    Fri Jun 1 22:33:51 CDT 2018: Trying to dump xxxxx_testing_wordpress again after repairing it
    Fri Jun 1 22:33:55 CDT 2018: ERROR: mysqldump: mysqldump: Couldn’t execute ‘show create table wp_wfNet404s‘: Table ‘xxxxx_testing_wordpress.wp_wfNet404s’ doesn’t exist (1146)
    xxxxx_testing_wordpress: 45.6MiB 0:00:04 [9.64MiB/s] [ <=> ]
    Fri Jun 1 22:33:55 CDT 2018: ERROR: Failed to dump database xxxxx_testing_wordpress: mysqldump returned 2 (see previous line)

    As you can see, the problematic table is created by WordFence (wp_wfNet404s). It is possible that the table was not properly created and this caused the problem. You can consider re-installing the plugin or checking its documentation for more information on how to prevent it from writing into the database in future.

    We would advise you to repair and optimise the database in order to prevent the problem from recurring in future.

    If you have further questions or if you experience any further problems, please do not hesitate to contact us at any time.

    Kind Regards,

    I should clarify one bit of my post. I’m asking y’all because I’m hoping you have some rebuttal that I can send back to them. Just really struggling to think that WordFence somehow DAMAGED anything…much less caused such a catastrophic failure. (Note: everything after that table was missing from the backups. Woo comes after Wf…for anyone who wants to groan as they realize the pain I’m dealing with. I did have an older backup that I had fortunately also converted to the newer database format…)

    Hi @deleyna

    If there is something wrong happened while creating Wordfence database tables, I believe deactivating the plugin then reactivating it again with “Delete Wordfence tables and data on deactivation” option activated should fix this issue, could you please give it a try?

    This option can be found in “Wordfence > Dashboard > Global Options > General Wordfence Options”.

    Thanks.

    Yes, I did that before I posted here. What I’m wondering is if there was somewhere I should have seen this. I noticed that WordFence has a table checking area (nice, btw) but it seems to not actually alert the admin when it finds a problem. I’m still trying to figure out how WordFence could have created this issue in the first place or if there was something else happening.

    Thank you for replying.
