I have recently updated a clients site, updating WordPress and all plugins to the latest version.

I found that the dashboard won’t load, no pages in the dashboard work, just a white screen. The front-end of the site loads fine though.

When I check console in the dashboard there’s nothing there so I have no error messages to use to help me fine the issue.

I have updated the server php to 7.3 but that doesn’t make a difference.

What else can I try? has anyone else experienced this?

When I used the wordfence assistant to remove the settings, tables etc it works and I can activate Wordfence again but as soon as I configure it the dashboard breaks again.

Wordfence has been working fine on this website for the past few years but something in a recent update has broken it.

  • Hi @one3rdnerd,

Is there anything in the Network tab? (Same window as the Console) You’ll want to refresh the page while having the developer tools open to see the results.

When you say configure, do you mean when you try saving any settings or when you configure the firewall?

    Hi Dave,

There isn’t much on that page.

    200
    GET
    https://www.whereicanbeme.com index.php document html 198 B 2 B
    932 ms
    200
    GET
    https://www.whereicanbeme.com favicon.ico img x-icon cached 1.37 kB

Just those two lines. Does that offer up any explanations?

By configure, I mean going into the plugin and clicking the prompt to configure the plugin, turn on firewall etc.

When I used Wordfence assistant I was able to remove all of these settings, that’s the only way I can make the dashboard accessible while having the plugin active.

I have been having to change the plugin folder from wordfence to xwordfence to deactivate it via FTP to get back in.

    I appreciate your help.

    Thanks

Is there an error report I can grab out of Wordfence that might help?

    Hey @one3rdnerd,

Can you turn on WP_DEBUG to see if there are any errors on the white screen?

    Debugging in WordPress

Can you also check the PHP error logs for any errors? If you’re not sure where these are your host can provide them to you.

I’d also suggest checking for a conflict. Disable all other plugins then give it a try to see if it helps. If it does, re-enable the plugins one at a time to find the culprit, if any.

    Thanks,

I had already tried those 3 things before contacting support.

At the moment I can’t even get into the WordPress dashboard even with Wordfence turned off.

So via FTP I turned off every plugin by changing the folder names and the theme and still I can’t load the dashboard.

Now I can’t even load the homepage, even after turning the plugins and theme back on.

    wp_debug shows no errors.

    Console shows no errors.

Error log in cpanel shows no errors.

So I’m pretty confused as to how to resolve or get back into this site.

    Any other ideas?

I have deleted the waf file in the root folder too and removed the rules from htaccess but no luck there.

    Thanks again.

    Hey @one3rdnerd,

    This is pretty odd.

I’m going to ask some colleagues for their thoughts. But I was wondering if you have a backup to restore from. That might be the easiest fix for whatever is happening. Or at least get us to a point to see what happened.

    Thanks,

Okay so strangely, even after disabling the theme via FTP I wasn’t able to get in or see any errors on screen with wp_debug or in console.

I managed to get in after removing the user.ini file and now I am able to see the errors I think might be causing the problem and they come from a component of the child theme that has depreciated PHP functions that aren’t supported in PHP 7.x

I am waiting for the theme devs to advise and provide the latest version so I can sort that out and then try again and see if the error persists.

I will report back once I have a result.

    Thanks

    Hey @one3rdnerd,

Thanks for the update. Please do let me know what you find.

    Thanks,

    Hey @one3rdnerd,

We haven’t heard back from you in a while, so I’ve gone ahead and marked this thread as resolved.

Please feel free to open another thread if you’re still having issues with Wordfence.

    Thanks,

    Gerroald
