I have Wordfence installed in a site that has since been converted to a multi-site so a second sub-site could be added. I’m having trouble logging into the sub-site and suspect the issue is related to the Wordfence installation. I’m hesitant to disable the plugin in the main site and enable @ the Network level of the multi-site without understanding the implication for existing users who have already setup their 2FA – will they be able to continue using their existing setup or will it require new secret codes be setup (and possibly a re-enabling/extension of the grace period)?

EDIT: the behavior when a user tries to login to the sub-site is the login form takes in the correct username/password combination but then returns the user to the login form to start over without showing any error message

Hi @s0medude, thanks for getting in touch about this.

It should be safe to deactivate and reactivate as a network plugin, as long as you have NOT enabled Wordfence > Login Security > Settings > Delete Login Security tables and data on deactivation.

If you’re concerned about losing this data though, you can back up the two wp_wfls_ tables (wp_ prefix may differ on your installation), and can restore them later if needed. The table names should normally be the same for a single site and a multisite, since it should only be network activated.

After reactivating Wordfence, any users with 2FA who are set up on both sites should see the 2FA prompt on both sites’ login pages, and the same code should work no matter which they’re signing in to.

We recommend that you check other plugins as well, in case they are supposed to only be network-activated which could lead to some other issues or conflicts with other plugins.

    Thanks,

    Peter.
