For some reason it appears Wordfence will randomly throw what would otherwise be unmoderated user comments into the moderation queue, requiring approval.

I run a multi-user blog whose users comments have never been moderated, and I noticed this random behavior just about the time I installed Wordfence for the first time. I had initially thought it was an Akismet problem, but, having gone over the matter in detain with an Akismet tech in detail, it appears that’s not possible.

I deactivated Wordfence for a day and a half and the problem stopped; within hours of reactivating Wordfence tonight the problem resumed with a vengeance.

The plugin looks very useful, but in my particular case I simply can’t have that behavior. I already had a fairly rigorous suite of security protocols in place, so I’m still okay there, although Wordfence does seem to provide a more elegant advance over them.

I’ll definitely be keeping my eyes open for this problem to be fixed so I can give it another try.

    Try disabling this option:

“Scan comments for known dangerous URLs and suspicious content”

Then tell me if the issue goes away.

Okay, with Wordfence reactivated and that comment scanning option disabled, the random comment moderating issue resumed.

Let’s see if it reappears even with Wordfence deactivated again. If it does, I’ll scratch this post as resolved.

OK thanks. Sounds like it may not be Wordfence.

    Right.

With Wordfence installed but deactivated since 3:20PM CDT yesterday, 10/5, I haven’t yet had any recurrences of comments being randomly held for moderation, an issue I’ve only experienced during the period I began using Wordfence over the last week, with the comment scanning option both enabled and disabled.

It might indeed not be Wordfence, just some weird idiosyncrasy caused by Wordfence being installed in my particular blog. I haven’t seen any other reports of this behavior after a cursory Google search, which is why I asked here.

What I’ll do is reactivate Wordfence again this afternoon and see if the issue returns.

I reactivated Wordfence with the comment option disabled at 5:40PM CDT today, 10/6/13. The next comment to arrive at 7:05PM CDT was put into the moderation queue. Much as I like the entire scope and feel of this plugin, I had no choice but to deactivate and delete it. Since no one else has reported this behavior, it may be idiosyncratic to my blog. The only comments held during the periods Wordfence was active were those of registered users, and no other comments were held at any other times.
