I have installed Wordfence on our WP multisite and would like to complete a standard/basic scan but it keeps failing.

“Scan Failed The scan has failed to start. This is often because the site either cannot make outbound requests or is blocked from connecting to itself.”

I ran identical scans on other WP multisites we manage without any issues

Checked with our server people and no issues on their end. Can I get some assistance?

Hi @infoo360, thanks for getting in touch.

Can you send a diagnostic report to wftest @ wordfence . com so that I can take a look at the configuration on the site experiencing scan issues? You can find the link to do so at the top of the Wordfence > Tools > Diagnostics page. Then click on “Send Report by Email”. Please add your forum username where indicated and respond here after you have sent it.

NOTE: It should look as follows – Screenshot of Tools > Diagnostic > Send by Email

    Thanks,

    Peter.

    Hello @wfpeter,

I have sent the diagnostic report to the email as you requested.

Please let me know if there is any other information I can provide you.

Hi @infoo360, thanks for sending that over.

Most of the communication, permissions and IP detection seems fine on your diagnostic. Even settings like max_execution_time is fine at 60 as Wordfence only attempts to use half of this value by default.

Have you tried starting scans remotely from the Wordfence > Tools > Diagnostics > Debugging Options section? Does the exact same issue occur? There are other scan troubleshooting tips here: https://www.wordfence.com/help/scan/troubleshooting/

If that doesn’t work, could you do the following steps for me:

    • Go to the Wordfence > Tools > Diagnostics page
    • In the “Debugging Options” section check the circle “Enable debugging mode”
    • Click to “Save Changes”.
    • CANCEL any current scan and start a NEW scan
    • Copy the last 20 lines from the Log (click the “Show Log” link) or so of the activity log once the scan finishes and paste them in this post.

Wordfence > Tools > Diagnostic > Debugging Screenshot

This will help me see exactly what is happening at the moment the scan fails.

    Thanks again,

    Peter.

    Hello Peter,

I tried those settings but received a “Scan Time Limit Exceeded” message.

I have sent the report to wftest @ wordfence . com with my username.

Can you please take a look?

    Hi @infoo360,

I looked at your second diagnostic too but your communication and memory/timeout settings all look fine and resemble that of a site that should be working. I see your scan is timing out after 3 hours, which is unusual. Scan Time Limit Exceeded errors are generally caused by either scanning a VERY large number of files, or something running slowly at the host. Would it be possible to keep a scan running for this time in the background and post the last 20 lines from the log as mentioned in my post above? We can see which stage the scan was at when it eventually timed out that way.

    Thanks again,

    Peter.
